Gratitude for our Veterans

As I watched my favorite veteran hang up his hat, I pondered how drastically different retiring from the military is from any other career.

In the civilian world we often idealize retirement as the end of the working chapter and the beginning of the non-working chapter.

We picture fun, leisure, and freedom from the 9 to 5.

But imagine being part of something as meaningful as national defense for 20+ years and then waking up not being.

Is there any follow up act that could come close to such magnitude?

I see veterans searching for one in all different avenues.

Yesterday my heart rejoiced for the veteran promoted to a position that allows him to work alongside the military again.

Yesterday my heart ached for the veteran alongside the road begging for my change.

Many vets keep working and many can’t keep working.

Despite being told they’re “done,” they’re not. Their best, worst, and scariest moments of serving stick with them.

The Air Force’s core values are integrity, service before self, and excellence in all they do. I’m thankful these stick too.

Even though I knew Joe only a short time before he retired from the Air Force, he’ll always be the kids’ and my hero.

Sending my sincere gratitude to all that have served.
